Current research indicates one third of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or obese. This increases risk for chronic health diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

With proper intervention, these conditions can be prevented. As a family, make simple changes towards a healthier lifestyle.  Some ideas include:

  1. Get outside and be active with your children.  Go for a walk, ride bikes, or show em what you got in a game of basketball. Make it fun so kids equate good memories and feelings with exercise.
  2. Limit screen time.  Experts recommend children get 2 hours or less of screen time per day.  This includes television, computer games, video games and smart phone usage.
  3. Eat real food.  Our children eat what we make available for them.  Have unprocessed foods on hand.  Examples include fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains (like popcorn).
Small steps can make big difference in the health and well-being of our children. Our children are counting on us.
