TempleCare isn’t just about fitness and eating well—it also involves pause, selah, and restoration.
‘Go!’ is my default mode, and I honestly can’t recall the last time I went multiple consecutive days without some kind of work — professional work, church work, family/home work, or public service work…
I love what I do, and even when my hands are still, my brain stays busy.
Thinking back, when I was in the hospital on high-risk pregnancy bed rest, I ‘worked.’ {Oh, if only I understood/appreciated then, what I know now.}
Y’all, this vacation was different.
I unplugged my phone from the internet and my mind from all thoughts of ‘work’ and deeply connected with God, my family, and myself.
I took intentional periods for pause and play.
The balance of reflective stillness and joyful activity refreshed my mind, body, and soul.
Science supports our need for intentional pauses.
Research published by the American Psychological Association and in the Journal of Occupational Health Psychology show that stepping away from constant work improves mental clarity, reduces stress, lowers the risk of burnout, and improves long-term productivity.
God’s Word affirms pause and play.
God rested after six days of creation (Genesis 2:2-3), Jesus regularly withdrew to pray and recharge (Luke 5:16), and Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 reminds us to embrace joyful aspects of life… ”I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.”
I enjoyed abundant undistracted time with family, reveled in God’s majesty shown in His creation, ate good (real good), moved joyfully, and spent precious reflective time with God and His Word. I’m grateful for His gift.
Oh, and the 801 emails waiting in one of my inboxes? They didn’t touch this peace. All have been reviewed. All orders have shipped. All is well.
Here on the other side of the Christmas/New Year holiday, how are you recharging for the year ahead?
